-
My garage/carport doesn’t seem to have much space between the door opening and ceiling (headroom), can I fit a garage door?
B&D has a solution that can assist some garages with inadequate headroom clearances. Fitted with the famous Roll-A-Door curtain, Flex-A-Door slides up and along the ceiling, and needs minimal headroom.
For the most accurate recommendation, we suggest a complimentary onsite consultation.
-
Should I use a professional installer?
YES, if you do not used a licensed garage door installer not only are you putting yourself and your family at risk, you are also voiding warranty.
At B&D, we firmly believe that the installation of a garage door is not a do-it-yourself job. A garage door is the largest moving object in your home and because of the large number of small parts; its installation is highly technical. Connecting the springs can be particularly dangerous and proper installation is critical to the performance of your door. A professional installer can take care of disposing your old door.
-
I want to replace my old door, but don’t know how to dispose of my old one. Will my B&D dealer take care of that?
Most B&D garage door installers will haul your old door away after the new door is installed for a small additional fee. Discuss this with the salesperson at your consultation for your new door.

What is the difference between a roller door and sectional door?
Roller doors, as the name suggests, is a continuous curtain of corrugated steel that rolls up into a neat cylinder (like a carpet) and sits above the garage door opening. Made from steel roller doors are known for being durable and space savers.
Sectional doors are made up of a series of rigid panels that slide up and along the ceiling to sit flush against the roof of your garage. For more information refer to this handy article.

Can I replace a single panel or section of my door, or do I need to replace the whole door?
Yes, if it’s a genuine B&D sectional garage door you can replace a single section. Sectional door panels can be replaced if the damage to them is minimal. If the damage has affected a more major component of the door (for example the frame) then you will need to replace the entire door as doors that have bent their frames or fallen off their hinges are usually too dangerous to repair.
A number of factors are considered when replacing the panel of the door including the age of the door and any upgrades we may have made to the machinery that manufactures our doors. Due to the every day wear and tear of your garage door we can’t guarantee that the new panel will be a perfect colour match as colours tend to fade and lighten in the harsh Australian climate.
Likewise if you have a sublimated garage door or a garage door with a woodgrain texture we recommend you purchase all new panels as the colour/grain will likely not be a perfect match. If you purchased your B&D door through one of our Accredited B&D Dealers we recommend you contact them first as they will have detailed records of your purchase to ensure a good fit. If you’re not sure give our friendly team a call on 13 62 63.
If you don’t have a B&D door, we can organise a complimentary consultation to recommend you a new door to help you secure your garage.
-
Can I add B&D garage door to a different opener?
No. B&D garage doors and openers and designed and tested to work together. We recommend buying a genuine B&D opener when purchasing your new garage door as this qualifies you for our market leading 10-year total confidence warranty.
-

In America, most garage doors are built from timber or wood and can be sanded and painted like your deck or home. In Australia, almost all garage doors are made from strong, reinforced steel or aluminium so they last longer in the harsh Australian climate. This means that you can technically paint them but it’s never going to come up as nicely and will quickly flake and fade. -
Can you match the garage door colour with the guttering/fascia of my house?
Absolutely! With garages accounting for up to 60% of a homes façade it’s important that it matches the look and feel of your home. In fact, we can even match it to your outdoor furniture or water feature. Explore our extensive range of colours and designs below or book a complimentary consultation with our mobile showroom consultant. They can bring full scale colour and design samples right to your driveway, taking the guess work out of colour matching. -

I've just moved into my new home and my garage door isn't running smoothly, what should I do?
First of all, congratulations on your new home! That's really exciting. During the build process of a new home often one of the first items installed is the garage door. The door is often installed months or even years before the keys are handed over for your new property. That's because the garage door is strong, secure and allows the property to be locked up to protect the rest of the build process.
However, this also means that the door is often exposed to extreme quantities of dust and debris throughout the duration of the build. B&D recommends getting your garage door serviced as soon as you move in to ensure that your door runs smoothly. -

Power outages
-
What should I do in the event of a power failure ?
When there is a power failure, you will be unable to automatically open or close your garage door or gate (unless you have Battery Backup fitted to the opener). To use your door / gate during a power outage, you will need to disengage the opener and operate the door manually.
Follow these four simple steps to safely open and close your garage door during an outage:
1. Disengage your Auto-Lock (if applicable)
The Auto-Lock device automatically locks your door when it closes. The small square lock is located either on the left or right hand side of the inside edge of the door, approximately 10 – 30cm from the floor. Once you have located it, press the emergency lock/unlock button on the front of the device. This will unlock the door. Note: not all garage doors have Auto-Lock installed.
2. Manually release the opener
There will be a red cord hanging from your garage door opener (regardless of whether you have a sectional or rolling garage door). You can follow our quick how to video guide or follow the instructions below.
- For rolling doors, pull the cord directly down.
- For sectional doors, either pull the cord towards or away from the door (this will depend on the specific opener you have installed – there is no harm in trying both ways until the door disengages).
You will hear a click to signify the change to disengaged. Try to open it – it should come up fairly easily however if it doesn’t then, it hasn’t been disengaged properly so please try again.
If you have an automatic gate, there are two manual release options:- For swing gates, pull the manual release pin up. Whilst holding the ring up, rotate clockwise.
- For sliding gates, slide the cover off the manual release handle on the side of the opener. Using the key provided by your installer, unlock the manual release (this is a security measure). Turn the handle anti-clockwise.
3. Open and close the door or gate by hand
You may now manually open and close the door as required. Take care and beware of items or people surrounding the door or gate so as not to close the door or gate onto them.
Note that your door will not be locked when the power is out therefore to lock the door you must re-engage the opener.
4. Reengage the opener
To re-engage the opener so your garage door and/or gate operates as normal refer to our quick how-to video here or follow the instructions below (link to videos)
- For garage doors, simply pull the red cord again in the same direction (note – some styles of B&D openers may require you to pull the cord in the opposite direction).
You will hear a click to signify the change to engaged. Use your remote to operate the door.– if the opener seems to be rotating but door isn’t moving (for sectional doors – if the chain is moving you need to wait until the chain index moves into the shuttle to engage the opener), then the door has not been re-engaged, try again. - For gates, simple repeat the steps to manually release the opener but turn anti-clockwise.
Experience frequent power outages?
If you often experience the inconvenience of power outages, it might be worthwhile adding Battery Back Up to your garage door opener. Battery Back Up ensures your garage door will continue to operate during power outages by drawing on built-in, rechargeable batteries. This device can either be added to compatible openers, or alternatively you may choose to upgrade to an opener that has this handy feature. -

Safety & Security
-
What is B&D Auto-Lock technology?
B&D’s Auto-Lock is our garage door security protection system that automatically sends a deadbolt through the guiderail of your B&D sectional garage door every time it’s closed. Auto-Lock ensures you have total peace of mind every time your garage door is closed that it’s not just shut, it’s locked shut. Auto-Lock can be installed on any genuine B&D sectional garage door.
For more information check out our handy video guide below.
-
What is the difference between shut and locked? How do I know if my garage door is locked?
Like your front door, when you shut your garage door, it’s not necessarily locked. Also like your front door, there are lots of different options and upgrades available for your garage door so that it does lock. Depending on how important security is to you, and what you keep behind your garage door, B&D have a range of security and locking options available to you to help protect the things that matter to you most.
Most garage doors with automatic openers (or motors) have some built-in security included. You typically need around 30kg to 50kg of force to open a ‘shut’ garage door. By adding a deadbolt locking system, like the B&D Auto-Lock, an intruder would need to impose up to 450kg of lifting force to force your garage door open. That’s the equivalent of someone lifting a 450kg weight! That’s what we call automatically ‘locked’.
If you see a physical key lock on the outside of your door (manual lock) or you see (and hear) the deadbolt locking system automatically engage from the inside of your garage when you close it, you know your garage door is locked. If you are unsure, give us a call and we can help talk through it with you.
-
Do all B&D doors lock?
Yes, to varying degrees (except Roll-A-Door NEO currently). As long as you purchase a B&D door & opener together, there is a locking solution available.
All B&D sectional garage doors are able to be locked securely shut with our B&D Auto-Lock system.
All B&D roller doors are able to be locked shut with our centre lift looking system.
-
What is a safety beam?
B&D safety beams sit at the base of your garage door and shoot an invisible beam from one side of the door to the other. When the beam is obstructed the garage door opener will not engage and if it is lowering will automatically stop and reverse preventing potentially catastrophic damage.
Safety beams are crucial for families with pets or small children and are required by law to be fitted on all garages with smart phone capability. For more information call us on 13 62 63 to discuss what options are available for you. -
How can garage door openers improve my home security?
All B&D openers have standard security features built in like Automatic Reverse and Automatic Backdrive. Automatic Reverse prevents the door from closing on any obstruction; as soon as the closing door encounters an obstacle in its path, the opener will immediately stop and reverse. Automatic Backdrive is designed to further prevent forced entry, with the opener driving back down if the door is being forced open. Automatic openers also remove the need for a fixed lock and handle, which is a common target among thieves. To level up your garage security again install a B&D Auto-Lock on your garage door.
