Remember the iconic sound of a garage door rolling up as you pulled into your driveway? This is a familiar melody in countless Australian homes and is synonymous with B&D, an innovative Australian company that has revolutionised the garage door industry for over 75 years.
Like Bushells or Steve Irwin, B&D is iconically Australian and has won the hearts of many Australians through its engineering ingenuity and innovation. From the world’s first design of the Roll-A-Door, a staple in many Australian homes, to the invention of the Nylofelt running strips and smartphone application, B&D has been a market leader since they first invented the roller door in 1956. This is why B&D is Australia’s original and most trusted garage door brand.
The Birth of B&D
With a desire to start their own business, two 20-year-olds, Arthur Byrne and Paul Davidson, began a steel fabrication business in a relative’s garage. With limited funds, the steel fabrication industry appealed to Byrne and Davidson because it required only a welder, a grinder, and an oxy set. B&D built its own factory and began undertaking engineering jobs throughout Australia.
In 1955, inventor Ben Saul approached Byrne and Davidson with the idea of creating a rolling garage door. This door would consist of compressed metal sheets fastened together that would roll and unroll without cracking. B&D agreed to develop this idea, which would change the direction of the company and transform B&D into the brand we know today.

The Roll-A-Door Revolution
After years of development and refinement, B&D was ready to release the world’s first rolling garage door. Intending only to produce 70 doors, B&D unveiled the revolutionary B&D Roll-A-Door at the Sydney Home Show in 1956 with the slogan “Even a child can open it.” The unexpected success and demand led to all 70 doors being sold within two months.

B&D Innovations
B&D understands that the things behind your garage door are the things that are most important to you. After the initial success of the Roll-A-Door, B&D continued to push the boundaries of their design, forming its own research and development department. This has ensured continuous work to improve the construction and design of the roller door.
In 1961, one of the smallest yet most ingenious innovations was introduced the ‘deluxe’ Centre Lift Lock. Moving the locking mechanism to the middle of the door rather than having a barrel bolt lock at the bottom. This removed the need to bend down to open the garage door and allowed Australians more convenient access to their homes.
Nylon transformed women’s fashion and led to one of the biggest breakthroughs in roller door technology Nylofelt running strips invented by B&D. Known for their woven nylon exterior and felt interior, Nylofelt running strips ensure all B&D roller doors open and close seamlessly and reduce noise. Nylofelt running strips were introduced into B&D roller doors in 1968 and are still used today.
B&D continued to go from strength to strength, introducing Colorbond Roll-A-Doors in 1971 and launching Australia’s first automatic rolling door opener, the Controll-A-Door, in 1975 making it easier and more convenient than ever to open your garage door.
B&D submitted a patent for the first pinch-free sectional panel door in Australia in 2000, importing exclusive equipment from the United States. Today, B&D manufactures its doors using the same technology. In another world first, B&D launched the Tri-Tran Plus Multi-frequency remotes in 2008.
In 2014, B&D was the first Australian garage door manufacturer to offer smartphone control for your garage, taking ease of operation to the next level. In 2016, B&D enhanced home security with the invention of the Auto-Lock, an automatic Locking System that sends a deadbolt through the guard rail of your garage door, locking it securely shut every single time.
2018 was another big year for B&D. After 75 years of designing, manufacturing, and testing our garage doors in Australia, B&D launched the industry-leading 10-year total confidence warranty when a B&D roller or sectional garage door and opener are purchased together. We back our products 100 percent, and we’re the only manufacturer who produces both our garage doors and openers, so you can trust in B&D’s reliability. The B&D mobile showroom was also launched in 2018, bringing the touch-and-test experience right to your doorstep, revolutionising the need for a large garage door showroom.
