At B&D, we're taking another big step towards a cleaner, safer future with a major manufacturing overhaul. We're excited to announce our transition to lead-free solder.
It's been a major undertaking for us, requiring significant time and investment. The shift has involved re-tooling of our production lines and changes to our electronic components.
But this change is better for the environment and safer for our workers. And of course, you'll still get the same high-quality products you’ve come to expect from B&D.
The transition applies universally across all B&D Group brands, including Automatic Technology, Dominator, and Garador.
Why the Change?
Since the dawn of electronics manufacturing, lead solder has always been the standard way to join many components together thanks to its low melting point. It makes manufacturing easier and allows for lower-cost components that don’t need to withstand high temperatures during assembly. It also allows manufacturers to use less costly assembly tools.
However, the need for more environmentally friendly and safer alternatives has become clear in recent years. That’s why we've now switched to a tin-silver-copper alloy solder, which offers similar performance without the harmful effects of lead.
By adopting lead-free solder, we're:
1. Protecting the Environment

2. Ensuring Health and Safety

3. Meeting Global Standards

What this means for you?
As a B&D consumer, you can expect:
- The same high-quality, reliable products you've always enjoyed from us
- Added peace of mind knowing your garage door opener is made with safer, more environmentally friendly materials
- Potential increase in your home's eco-friendly rating
Quality Control in the Lead-Free Era
Lead-free soldering has its challenges. The new process requires careful temperature control to ensure problem free connection between components and circuit boards.
To handle this, we’ve installed new re-flow ovens designed to manage the higher temperatures needed for lead-free solder. And to make sure every product meets our quality standards; we’ve also installed 3D optical inspection tools to spot even the tiniest defects.

From Packaging to Power Savings: B&D Leads the Way
B&D is committed to a greener future, continuously exploring ways to reduce our environmental footprint and improve our products. Our switch to lead-free solder is just one aspect of our broader sustainability efforts.
We've made huge strides in eliminating plastic and polystyrene from our packaging, at the same time incorporating sustainable steel with recycled content into our products. Across our Australian sites, we've systematically reduced tonnes of waste and implemented stringent supplier audits to ensure ethical sourcing.
With 90% of our facilities now illuminated by LED lighting, we're also working hard on energy efficiency. This change reflects our broader mission to create products that are both cutting-edge and kind to the environment.
By choosing B&D, you're not just selecting a superior garage door system - you're supporting a company dedicated to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in every aspect of our operations.
